Don Roque

Roque, 82, has a wife, five kids, and eight siblings. Roque and Antonio, the youngest brother who is 67, live in the same building. Antonio is in a wheelchair after an accident he had 26 years back. After Antonio divorced his wife six months ago, and due to his delicate condition, Roque moved in to take care of him, leaving his own wife and kids on the bottom floor.

“I practically live here. My family is downstairs. I go down sometimes, every now and then. Some days I don’t even go down,” Roque explains.

Antonio has not been out on the streets in years. Before going out to El Conde, Roque makes food and carries his brother onto the bed, placing a glass of water and the phone nearby. He does this twice a day. “I’m doing it with a lot of love, a lot of love, because I can’t live without him nor him without me.”

* Antonio passed away in 2009. Roque went back to living with his wife and kids downstairs. After a fall in 2012, Roque was in a wheelchair until his death in 2014.

Don Roque, 82, tiene una esposa, cinco hijos y ocho hermanos. Roque y Antonio, el hermano menor de 67, viven en el mismo edificio. Antonio está en silla de ruedas luego de un accidente que tuvo 26 años atrás. Cuando Antonio se divorció de su esposa hace seis meses, y debido a su condición delicada, Roque se mudó con él para cuidarlo, dejando a su propia esposa e hijos en el piso de abajo.

“Yo prácticamente vivo aquí. La familia está abajo. Yo bajo a veces, de vez en cuando. Hay días que no bajo,” explica Roque.

Antonio no ha salido a la calle en años. Antes de ir al Conde, Roque prepara comida y sube a su hermano en la cama, colocándole un vaso de agua y el teléfono cerca. Hace esto dos veces al día. “Lo estoy haciendo con mucho amor, mucho amor, porque no puedo vivir sin él, ni él sin mí.”

* Antonio murió en el 2009. Roque regresó a vivir con su esposa y sus hijos en el piso de abajo. Luego de una caída en el 2012, Roque anduvo en silla de ruedas hasta su muerte en el 2014.
