Nana (2015)

Synopsis

Leidy, Fina and Clara leave their children in distant towns to be raised by relatives while they are away caring for somebody else’s child. Going back and forth between urban and rural scenarios, this documentary goes deep into the conflicts faced by live-in nannies. In a love chain, where mother figures are substituted and duplicated, bonds grow strong between kids and their nannies, and between the nannies’ children and the grandmothers or aunts who care for them. Is there just one way to define motherly love?

“Nana” (Nanny) premiered at the Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano in Havana, Cuba, in December 2015. It began the festival circuit from there on, and has screened in Chicago, New York, Montevideo, Madrid, Queretaro, Antigua, Tenerifeand other cities. It won the production grant FONPROCINE 2013, and the award for Best Feature in Dominican Republic at the III RDoc International Film Festival in March 2016.

The film is now available for purchase for libraries on Kanopy Streaming. If you’re a student or professor you can watch the film for free! Let your library know you’re interested. For now, this option is not available in Dominican Republic.

Sinopsis

Leidy, Fina y Clara dejan a sus hijos en pueblos lejanos bajo el cuidado de familiares mientras cuidan los hijos de otras personas. Entre escenarios urbanos y rurales, este documental se adentra en los conflictos enfrentados por las niñeras que viven con sus empleadores. En una cadena de amor donde las figuras maternas se sustituyen y se duplican, se crean vínculos fuertes entre los niños y sus nanas, al igual que entre los hijos de las nanas y las abuelas o tías que los crían. ¿Hay una sola manera de definir amor materno?

“Nana” estrenó en el Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano en La Habana, en diciembre 2015. A partir de ahí, inició su recorrido por el circuito de festivales, y se ha presentado en Chicago, New York, Montevideo, Madrid, Querétaro, Antigua, Tenerife. Ganó el premio de producción FONPROCINE 2013, y el premio a Mejor Largometraje de República Dominicana en el III Festival RDoc, en marzo de 2016.
