Adolescent Girls’ Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the Dominican Republic
In Dominican Republic, 20.5 percent of girls and young women ages 15 to 19 become pregnant while still in their teens, most of them without having intended or wanting to do so. This is the highest adolescent fertility rate of all the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). "[At school] they’d tell us not to have sex at an early age—that we shouldn’t be doing that,” said a girl who became sexually active at 14 and pregnant at 16. No one informed her about contraceptive methods or how to access or use them.

En República Dominicana, el 20.5 % de niñas y mujeres jóvenes entre 15 y 19 años de edad quedan embarazadas en la adolescencia, la mayoría de forma no buscada ni deseada. Esta es la tasa más alta de fertilidad adolescente de todos los países de América Latina y el Caribe, según datos de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS). “[En la escuela] nos decían que no tuviéramos relaciones sexuales a temprana edad, que no deberíamos estar haciendo eso”, contó una joven que inició su vida sexual a los 14 años y quedó embarazada a los 16. Nadie le informó sobre métodos anticonceptivos ni sobre cómo obtenerlos o usarlos.
